Today at the UN in New York, the EU, France, Romania and Ukraine will have a dedicated session on Global Food Security and the Black Sea. The region is a top global exporter of cereals and oilseeds and supplies about 30% of the world‘s demand for wheat, most of which transits the Black Sea. The recent escalation of Russia‘s war of aggression against Ukraine disrupts trade logistics and maritime transport - and the consequences are felt all over the word. They have the potential to cause yet another global food shock. This is why the EU and its partners are taking the initiative to address this situation and advocate for restoring freedom of navigation.

In Rome, we are also working closely with the UN Organisations in Rome (FAO, WFP and IFAD) to mitigate the global food security consequences of the current escalation in the Black Sea.
