Kuwaiti diplomat also condemns Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza

**NEW YORK:** Kuwait renewed on Wednesday its condemnation of Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its threats to freedom of navigation there, as well as the continued disruption of shipping in Bab Al-Mandab by Iran’s proxies, warning of the impact on global food security, the flow of essential goods and the cost of transport and insurance.

Diplomatic Attaché Dalal Sharar made the remarks in Kuwait’s statement to the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly, which deals with economic and financial affairs, during its debate on eradicating poverty and on agricultural development, food security and nutrition.

Sharar called for the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, and for Iran to stop immediately all acts and threats that obstruct legitimate transit passage or freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, or that threaten maritime security in Bab Al-Mandab, in line with international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

She said the world faced interlinked threats to food security, from climate change and water scarcity to supply chain disruption caused by threats to vital waterways.

Sharar warned that the hunger crisis continued to affect millions of people, even though the global hunger rate fell to 8.2 percent in 2025, noting wide differences between regions. The number of hungry people in Asia stood at about 292 million, while Africa had the highest number, at about 309 million, nearly one-fifth of the continent’s population, she said.

She stressed the need to direct support and resources to the areas in greatest need and to strengthen their resilience against successive shocks.

On Gaza, Sharar strongly condemned Israel’s use of the starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, stressing that the practice is prohibited under international humanitarian law and has been condemned by Security Council Resolution 2417.

She concluded by reaffirming Kuwait’s position that eradicating poverty and hunger in all its forms is a shared priority and a cornerstone of sustainable development and human dignity. She called for stronger international efforts to achieve fair and comprehensive development, provide sustainable financing, protect the environment, strengthen social protection and build resilient food systems. — KUNA
