Food waste is a major driver of greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers in Germany have made smart sensors for apples to reduce spoilage, while experts say AI could help curb food loss in countries like Indonesia.

Food waste is one of the world's biggest climate challenges. If it were a country, it would rank behind only China and the United States in greenhouse gas emissions. One in ten stored apples spoils before it reaches consumers. To cut those losses, researchers at Germany's Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy have developed smart sensors hidden inside artificial apples. The sensors monitor cold-storage conditions in real time, detecting condensation around the fruit and helping operators adjust temperature and humidity before apples spoil. Experts believe the technology could also reduce losses in other fruits and vegetables, especially in countries where post-harvest waste remains high. The challenge now is making it affordable for widespread use.
